birth.
by tamara on April 12, 2012

almost 15 years ago I gave birth to my first child, joshua.
of that life changing experience these images above are all i have,
i have even less for my following 4 births;
there is so much more that took place between that first and last image,
so much more.
i wish i had the full story,
but i’m the photo taker in my family
so this is it.
most of you know just how much i love photography,
and telling a story in pictures.
i have been thinking about the times in our lives that are incredibly life changing,
and i have noticed that this time, the time when we give birth often goes fully undocumented,
the story of birth is the one i feel i want to tell the most.
from beginning to beginning if you like, and [everything] in between.
it is not that all the other stories that make up our life have less importance,
they are often the ones that lead up to the story of birth after all,
but i feel drawn to documenting births in a sensitive and real way.
i wonder if there is somebody you know that you think would like to have the birth of their child[ren] documented?
i would like to offer a complimentary birth session to you or someone close to you,
all you need to do is email me tamara@tamaraerbacher.com or leave me a comment
and let me know why you think this person would love to have their story told.
submissions close on the 30th of april and the only restriction is that the person must be a melbourne resident.
i really look forward to hearing from you,
xx Tam

I can so see you doing this! I for one would love to do this too… When the time comes for me to have another baby I am so putting my hand up for you to document this… I know what it’s like to be the “photo-taker in the family”!

Would you believe that I just received news that our beautiful Emma is 12 weeks pregnant!! So I am putting my hand up for her as she deserves it, a beautiful girl who has spent her career looking after others precious little bubs!

I know I’ve already said that this is SO UP YOUR ALLEY. You’d be Just The Right person for the job. Sadly, my Mr remains unconvinced about the whole conception-fourth-time-’round thing…

Such a gorgeous idea.
Such a wonderful offer.
I know without a doubt you’ll be amazing.
Unfortunately my Mr is not coming to the fourth child party either. x

I know what you mean about feeling there is too little visual record of those early years, specifically the beginning of your child’s life. We treated photos like gold back when my daughter was born. I was busy mothering and took so few. But, the ones I so have are so very important, they are etched in my mind forever.

I think documenting such a precious time in ones life is so amazing and something we often overlook. I really wish we had captured one of our five in this way…maybe we’ll be lucky sixth time round.
